Fantasy Kayak Tour

By Robby John Templeton

You are sitting comfortably in your kayak, paddling slowly. Breath the fresh salt air deep into your lungs. Take in the sights and sounds of nature as they float by. Gulls cry out far overhead as the waves lap the sandy shores around you.

Winding down the scenic Wequetequack River, admire the beautiful historic vacation homes scattered along the riverbanks and variety of boats fastened to the passing docks.  Enjoy the view, or the conversation- with your friends, or with our friendly guides. As the river widens pouring into Wequetequock Cove two majestic swans greet the group. At eye level, they are massive and regal.

Making our way across to Sandy Point, some paddlers get out to stretch their legs and watch the pterodactyl like Great Black Back Gulls in their posh island nesting grounds. Others practice their kayaking skills in the calm waters alongside the island beach.  After awhile, all captains return to their “ships” and paddle across the bay and along the coast to get a closer view of a Great Egret so still, he is almost invisible. Our kayaks make it easy to navigate the light chop as we maneuver along the shore.

Suddenly, the entire group pauses in awe at the sight of a fluttering osprey as she dive-bombs the sea in search of lunch. Emerging from a wave with a dog like shake of her feathers, she heads off in the direction of the marina and the group follows far behind. Out in front a race ensues between three of the more energetic paddlers that ends in a water-fight. As we leisurely meander back towards the marina some folks are practicing advanced strokes and getting pointers from our knowledgeable guides, while others quietly bask in the tranquility of the surroundings.

Later, back at the marina, we try out our sea legs on land and smile.
